Diet & Nutrition Test

A healthy diet can help you reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve your overall health. In this test, we unpack how your body is predisposed to metabolise certain nutrients that directly influence your heart health.

Test Details

  • Caffeine Metabolism

    Caffeine is a natural drug found in coffee beans, tea and carbonated drinks. It is useful in relieving the effects of drowsiness and increasing alertness. Caffeine has the ability to bind to receptors (proteins) on the heart causing increased heart rate. Although in small doses this can be good, large doses can cause uncontrollable heart rate. This test would govern your genetic makeup or genotype and more specifically the rate in which your body degrades caffeine.

    Gene Tested: CYP1A2

  • Folate

    Also known as Folic acid, is a B vitamin required by the body to make DNA. Folate cannot be created by the body and is therefore required in the diet through numerous food sources. If you have insufficient levels of folate, this can lead to folate deficiency. Folate deficiency is linked with decreased levels of folate and increased levels of homocysteine, the substance linked to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. This test will determine your folate and homocysteine levels, therefore indicating the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

  • Triglycerides

    Triglyceride is a component of body fat and is present in the blood, important for transporting body fat to the liver. High levels of triglyceride is associated with increased risk of heart disease. This test will determine your triglyceride levels and your risk of developing heart disease.

    Genes Tested: ANGPTL3, APOB, FADS1, GCKR, LPL, MLXIPL, NCAN, PLTP, TRIB1, XKR6, ZNF259

  • HDL Cholesterol

    High-density lipoprotein (HDL) also known as ‘good’ cholesterol removes excess and bad cholesterol from the bloodstream rather than depositing it in the arteries. Cholesterol accumulation in the arteries can lead to Atherosclerosis, leading to plaque ruptures and clotting, which in turn, may cause cardiovascular complications. Decreased levels of HDL poses an increased risk of developing cardiovascular problems therefore this test would determine your HDL levels and the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

  • LDL Cholesterol

    Low-density Lipoprotein (LDL) also known as ‘bad’ cholesterol transport cholesterol to the arteries allowing the build-up of plaque resulting in the narrowing of blood vessels. As a result this leads to cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure. High levels of LDL therefore increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and this test would determine your LDL levels and the associated risk.

  • Gene X (ASGR1 Variant)

    A recent gene discovered in 2016, called Gene X, has protective effects towards cardiac health. Carriers of Gene X have a 34% reduction in their risk of coronary artery disease along with additional health benefits including low and high levels of LDL and HDL respectively. This test would determine if you possess a copy of this gene and its associated health benefits.

It is best suited for those who are following or about to follow a treatment related to a heart disease.

Test Details

  • Beta Blockers

    A class of drugs used in the treatment of angina, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and high blood pressure. Beta blockers work by lowering blood pressure and flow to heart, thereby reducing stress and pressure on the heart. This test would determine your genotype and the type of response you would have when using beta-blocker treatments.

    Gene Tested: GRK5

  • Beta Blockers and LVEF Response

    Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF), is used as a measurement to detect heart failure. It is the amount of oxygenated blood pumped around the body, therefore an indication of heart efficiency. This test would determine your genotype and associated efficiency response following beta-blocker treatment.

  • Warfarin

    An anticoagulant drug also referred to as “blood thinner” is used to prevent harmful blood clots from forming. This test would determine your genotype and the dosage of Warfarin you require.

    Genes Tested: CYP2C9 and VKORC1

  • Clopidogrel Metabolism

    An antiplatelet drug used to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. The drug works by preventing platelets from binding together that would otherwise lead to the formation of blood clots. This test would determine your genotype and your ability to metabolise Clopidogrel.

    Gene Tested: CYP2C19

  • Verapamil and QTC Interval

    A drug used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain) and arrhythmias (irregular beating). Calcium causes blood vessels to tighten, therefore increasing blood pressure. Verapamil blocks calcium entry, causing the vessels to widen and lower blood pressure. Changes within a calcium gene can cause adverse effects when on Verapamil treatment. This test would determine your genotype and the risk of developing cardiac problems whilst on Verapamil treatment.

  • Verapamil VS. Atenolol

    Two classes of drugs (beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers) are used to treat heart diseases and high blood pressure. Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker and Atenolol is a beta-blocker. In some cases, our genes control how effective we respond to one treatment over the other. Our genes determine which drug we would respond better to. This test would determine which drug you are most likely to benefit from.

  • Simvastatin Induced Myopathy

    A form of drugs called statin, are used to reduce the amount of cholesterol in your blood. A common side effect of statin use is Myopathy (muscle disease). This test would determine your risk of developing Myopathy due to statin use.

  • Metoprolol Metabolism

    A type of beta-blocker used to treat angina and hypertension. An enzyme found in the liver is responsible for breaking down 60% of Metoprolol. This test would therefore determine your enzyme levels and ultimately the recommended dose of Metoprolol to be given.

    Gene Tested: CYP2D6

  • Perindopril

    Perindopril is a long acting enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor), used to treat hypertension. Changes in the gene of this enzyme increase the chances of severe side effects whilst taking perindopril. This test would determine your genotype and risk of any cardiac events while using Perindopril.

    Genes Tested: AGTR1 and BDKRB1

  • Estrogen Supplementation

    Drugs containing estrogen such as those found in hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptive pills are known to increase the risk of developing clotting disorders and thrombosis. This test would determine your genotype, as well as any genetic predispositions causing thrombosis when taking drugs containing estrogen.

  • APOE, TYPE III Hyperlipoproteinemia

    A rare genetically inherited disorder resulting in the improper function of APOE, a protein involved in transporting and clearing fats and cholesterol. Mutations in this gene results in the build-up of fatty materials in blood vessels, obstructing blood flow and resulting in coronary heart disease. This test would determine your genotype and the risk of developing Type III HLP.

  • Atrial Fibrillation

    A common form of abnormal heart rhythm, a major cause of stroke and association with coronary heart disease. In a normal condition, the heart’s pacemaker sends regular electrical impulses. However, in AF, these impulses are sent out in a disorganised manner resulting in an irregular and fast pulse. This test would determine your genotype and risk of developing of Atrial Fibrillation.

  • Coronary Artery Disease

    This disease involves the narrowing of the coronary arteries, the main supply line of oxygenated blood to the heart. This narrowing is caused by a build-up of plaque along the walls of the artery. The cause of CAD is strongly influenced by a patient’s genetics and his/her lifestyle. This test would determine your risk of developing coronary heart disease.

  • Hypertension

    Blood pressure is required to deliver blood to all areas of the body. Hypertension is when the pressure is above normal and can result in the enlargement of the heart leading to heart failure. This test would determine your genotype and the risk of developing hypertension.

  • Myocardial Infarction

    This life-threatening event occurs when the blood supply to the heart is blocked usually by a blood clot in the coronary arteries. This test would determine your genotype and the associated risk of a myocardial infarction occurring.

  • Peripheral Arterial Disease

    The narrowing of the arteries which supply blood to leg muscles. These arteries become narrowed due to the gradual build-up of fat within the artery walls. Loss of blood to leg muscles can cause pain and discomfort when walking. This test would determine your genotype and risk of developing peripheral arterial disease.

  • Venous Thrombosis

    A blood clot that forms within a vein. A Venous Thrombosis can be classified based on its location and severity. If however, a thrombus (blood clot) breaks off and travels towards the lung blocking an artery, pulmonary embolism can develop, a severe life-threatening condition. This test would determine your genotype and risk of developing venous thrombosis.

  • Sickle Cell Anaemia

    An inherited condition that is characterised by abnormally shaped red blood cells. These cells are incapable of surviving as long as healthy cells, thus they are destroyed and anaemia develops (lack of red blood cells). Individuals who possess one sickle cell gene and one normal gene are known to have the ‘sickle cell trait’ (SCT). These individuals may not necessarily present any symptoms; however, they are able to pass on the gene. Individuals carrying both genes develop Sickle Cell Anaemia. This test will determine if and how many sickle cell genes you possess.
